The second week of April is National Dog Bite Prevention Week, and while we know our furry friends are full of love, even the sweetest pups can feel nervous or overwhelmed sometimes. That’s why it’s important to understand their body language and set them up for success!

The truth is that our pups try to communicate their concerns to us before it ever becomes a snap, lunge, or worse, but their signals are often misunderstood or ignored. It’s time for us humans to take the lead on preventing dog bites!

If a dog suddenly freezes in place, raises the fur along its back, or bares its teeth with a growl, it’s best to give them space. Ears pinned back or standing stiffly forward, a hard stare, or a tail held rigidly can also signal that they’re feeling stressed or uneasy.

Another common sign is “whale eye,” where you can see the whites of their eyes more than usual – this means they’re on high alert. Understanding these cues helps keep interactions safe and stress-free for both humans and pups!

Here Are Buddy’s Tips for Staying Safe & Keeping Tails Wagging:

🔸 Respect their space – Just like humans, dogs need their personal bubble! Give them room, especially while eating or resting.

🔸 Learn their language – Yawning, lip-licking, and tucked tails can mean a pup is feeling uneasy. If they look stressed, give them time to relax.

🔸 Ask before petting – Not all dogs love surprise belly rubs! Always ask the owner before reaching out to pet a pup you don’t know.

🔸 Supervise kiddos & pups – Little ones don’t always understand boundaries, so keep an eye on interactions to make sure everyone stays happy and safe.

🔸 Give them an escape route – If a dog feels trapped, they might react out of fear. Let them move away if they need to! And let their crates be a safe space where they can retreat to when needed.

A little understanding goes a long way in keeping both humans and pups happy! 🐾

Let’s make the world a safer place, one doggo at a time. 💙
